Crab cakes with red pepper sauce, delicious, easy to make and is a great combination!

Crab cakes by

Ingredients for the cakes

makes 6 cakes

  • 300 g crabmeat
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 bunch of coriander,  chopped
  • 1 small red chilli, finely chopped
  • salt and fresh ground black pepper
  • 1-2 tbsp olive oil to fry

Ingredients for de red pepper sauce

  • 1/2 red pepper, peeled and deseed
  • 1 red round tomato, skinless and deseed
  • 1 shallot, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 5 black peppercorns
  •  1 cayenne chilli, finely chopped
  • 2 fresh almonds
  • 2 tbsp  dry white wine
  • 1 sprig of fresh thyme
  • a little bit of sea sauce
  • 100 ml chicken or vegetable stock
  • 1 tbsp olive oil


To make the crab cakes

  1. To make the cakes, mix in a bowl, crabmeat, breadcrumbs, egg yolk, chilli, coriander, salt and fresh ground black pepper and  shape to 6 round cakes.
  2. Heat olive oil in a frying pan, add the cakes and fry for few minutes on each side until lightly golden. Drain on kitchen paper.

To make the red sauce

  1. Place in a mortar a little bit of sea sauce, peppercorns, chopped garlic, fresh almonds, thyme and chilli, use the pestle to grind all the ingredients together to make a paste.
  2. Heat olive oil in a saucepan and cook the shallots for few minutes, add  chopped skinless and deseed tomato and pepper and cook for further few minutes, add the paste from the mortar and white wine, cook for 2 minutes, add the stock, bring to the boil and cook for 3-4 minutes.
  3. Place in a blender or food processor and purée until smooth.
  4. Serve the crab cakes with the pepper sauce.

2- Bolinho de carne de caranguejo com molho de pimentão.

Ingredientes para 6 bolinhos

  • 300 g de carne de caranguejo
  • 1 gema de ovo
  • 2 colheres de farinha de rosca
  • 1 pimenta vermelha pequena, bem picadinha
  • 3 colheres de coentro, picadas
  • sal
  • pimenta negra fresca moída
  • 2 colheres de azeite de oliva para fritar
Modo de preparo
  1. Misturar em uma vasilha a carne de caranguejo, a gema de ovo, a farinha de rosca, a pimenta, o coentro, sal e pimenta.
  2. Fazer 6 bolinhas com a mistura.
  3. Aquecer o azeite em uma frigideira e dourar os bolinhos por todos os lados. Secar com papel toalha e servir com o molho de pimentão.
Ingredientes para o molho de pimentão
  • 1/2 pimentão vermelho sem a pele e sem as sementes, cortados em cubos
  • 1 tomate maduro, sem a pele e sem a semente cortados em cubos
  • 1 colher (chá) de tomilho fresco picado
  • 1 pimenta cayenne, bem picadinha
  • 1 dente de alho picado
  • 1 cebola chatola, bem picada
  • 5 pimentas negras fresca
  • um pouquinho de sal grosso
  • 100 ml de caldo de frango
  • 2 colheres de vinho branco seco
  • 2 almendras enteras
  • 1 colher (chá) de azeite de oliva 
Modo de preparo
  1. Em um pilão amassar bem o alho, o tomilho, as 5 pimentas, al almendras  e o sal grosso até formar uma pasta.
  2. Esquentar o azeite de oliva em uma frigideira e fritar a chalota por 2 minutos, acrescentar o pimentão e o tomate e cozinhar por mais alguns minutos, acrescentar o vinho branco e o caldo de frango e cozinhar por mais 3-4 minutos.
  3. Bater tudo no liquidificador, até formar um molho homogêneo.
  4. Servir com os bolinhos.

3- Croquetas de carne de cangrejo (bue del mar) com salsa de pimentón.
Ingredientes para 6 croquetas
  • 300 g de carne de cangrejo (bue del mar)
  • 1 yema de huevo
  • 2 cucharas de pan rallado 
  • 1 pimienta roja fresca, bien picada
  • 3 ramitos de cilantro fresco, troceado
  • sal 
  • pimenta negra fresca molida
  • 2 cucharas de aceite de oliva
  1. En un bol, mezclar la carne de cangrejo, yema de huevo, pan rallado, pimenta fresca, cilantro, sal y pimienta.
  2. Formar las croquetas y freír en al aceite de oliva hasta que estén ligeramente doradas por todos los lados. 
  3. Servir con la salsa de pimientos.
Ingredientes para la salsa de pimentón
  • 1/2 pimentón rojo, sin la piel y sin las semillas,  cortados en cubitos
  • 1 tomate maduro, sin la piel y sin las semillas, cortados en cubos
  • 1 chalota finamente picada
  • 1 pimienta cayena 
  • 1 diente de ajo, picado
  • 5 pimentas negras enteras
  • 2 ramitas de tomillo fresco
  • 2 cucharas de vino blanco seco
  • 100 ml de caldo de pollo
  • 1 o 2 cucharas de aceite de oliva
  • un poquito de sal gorda
  • 2 almendras enteras
  1. En un mortero, mezclar bien el ajo, la sal gorda, las 5 pimientas, el tomillo, las almendras y la pimienta cayena hasta formar una pasta.
  2. Calentar el aceite de oliva y freír la chalota por un par de minutos, añadir la pasta del  mortero y cocer por  minuto,  agregar el pimentón y el tomate y cocer por mas un par de minutos.
  3. Añadir el vino y el caldo de pollo y cocer por 3-4 minutos.
  4. Mezclar todo muy bien en la licuadora hasta formar una salsa homogénea.
  5. Servir con las croquetas.

Oh on the side note I tried the most amazing Spanish green olives the other day the brand was called Amanida- Aceituna Alinada (oh my goodness I am so addicted) Do you have these in your markets?     • The first time I made this recipe it was in England, the crab there tastes so good and last week I bought some for very good price here, it was in offer in Carrefour, have a great weekend:)
